How do I install rolled roofing is a fair question for a shed, a mudroom, or a 2/12 porch. It is the wrong product for the main field of an Omaha house. Rolled roofing is asphalt in a roll — mineral-surfaced, about three feet wide, meant for low slope where shingles will not sit. It is cheaper than a membrane. It also splits, blisters, and walks in Nebraska heat.
When rolled roofing is the right call
- A detached shed or lean-to you are not insuring as living space.
- A small low-slope porch that already has a sound deck and a drip edge.
- A temporary dry-in, not a 20-year house roof.
If the low-slope area is part of the house — a 1960s ranch addition, a bump-out behind a Dundee two-story — we would rather talk TPO, EPDM, or a converted slope than a 90-pound roll from the hardware aisle. That is a roof installation conversation.
The honest DIY sequence on a shed
- The deck has to be dry, tight, and flush. Rolled roofing prints every hump.
- Drip edge first. Water has to leave the wood, not sit in the fascia.
- Start at the lowest edge. Overlap the next course the amount the roll prints — usually 2 to 6 inches. Work uphill so laps shed water.
- Nail in the lap, not in the exposed face if you can help it. Exposed nails on a low slope are leaks with a calendar.
- Seal the laps with the cement the roll calls for. A dry, warm day. Cold Nebraska mornings will not bond asphalt.
- Flash any wall or pipe with actual flashing, not a smear of tar. Tar is how porch leaks come back in March.
