What Is Fiber Cement Siding?

Fiber cement siding is a factory board made of Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber. It is cut and hung like wood clapboard. It is not vinyl. It does not lock. It takes paint. James Hardie is the name most Omaha bids use; there are other brands. If a bid just says “cement board,” ask which product and which thickness.

How it is different from vinyl

  • It is rigid. Vinyl hangs and moves. Fiber cement is a board you fasten through. Movement is in the paint and the joints, not the lock.
  • It is heavy. A square of 5/16-inch lap is a two-person carry. The wall and the crew both feel it. Staging on a two-story West Omaha house is not a vinyl day.
  • It wants paint. Factory color is a coating. Hail and a south wall in Kearney still chalk. You will paint it again. Vinyl you replace when the color is gone.
  • It does not melt or oil-can. Heat waves vinyl. Fiber cement sits there. Hail can still chip the face and break corners.

Where it belongs in Nebraska

We put fiber cement on houses that already have it, on elevations an HOA wrote down as “Hardie or equal,” and on jobs where the owner wants a painted board look that vinyl will never give. It is a good answer on a southwest Lincoln two-story that already has stone on the first floor. It is a pricey answer on a 1980s vinyl ranch that only needs the hail face replaced.

Behind it, the same rules as any siding: wrap, sill pans, kickout flashing. Cement board over torn felt is still a wet wall. That work is on the siding installation page.

Cost and repair, honestly

Material and labor both run higher than vinyl. A chipped board can be replaced if the color still exists. A ten-year south wall that has been painted twice will not take a new factory board without a stripe. Then you are painting the elevation, not swapping one plank.

If the question is “what is on my house?”, look at a cut end. Vinyl is hollow plastic. Fiber cement is a dense gray board. Wood is grain. We will tell you which it is on the walk — same visit as the roof if hail hit both.

Quick answers

Is fiber cement the same as Hardie board?

Hardie is a brand of fiber cement. The category is cement, sand, and cellulose boards hung like clapboard. Ask for the product name and thickness on the bid.

Does fiber cement siding hold up to Omaha hail?

It does not oil-can like vinyl. Hail can still chip the face and break corners. We photograph that with the roof when both were in the same storm.

Can I install fiber cement siding myself?

A small, one-story gable is possible if you can handle the weight and the silica dust. A two-story elevation is a crew job — staging, flashing, and paint.
