Attic Moisture and Roof Ventilation in Nebraska
A pretty field with a dead attic is a callback. Nebraska July will cook dark architectural shingles from below if there is no intake at the soffit and no exhaust at the ridge. January uses the same dead attic to grow ice dams.

NPPD treats ventilation as the second half of the ice-dam fix: some heat still gets through, and you have to move it out before it melts the snow. The same stack of air is why a 12-year Elkhorn roof can look 20 on the south slope.
Two housing stocks, two failures
- Newer west Omaha / Elkhorn / west Kearney — tight envelopes, bath fans dumped in the attic, ridge vent painted shut or never cut.
- Older Omaha and Lincoln — blown insulation covering the soffit baffles, can lights dumping moisture, no ridge at all.
What we check on a replacement
Intake at the soffit, a path across the attic, exhaust at the ridge or boxes. We will not add a ridge vent on a roof that already has a working box-vent system without looking. We are a roofing company. Deep insulation retrofits are a different trade. We will tell you when the attic needs an insulator, not a thicker shingle.
